Frank Gets A Barf Diet

Frank Gets A Barf Diet

by Jack Walden

Wow, I ran out of dog food and decided to use the foods in the frig to create a BARF Diet for Frank for one week. It was easy to put it all together. Then, I wrapped it in plastic wrap in packs of 3 1/2 pound patties and froze a week’s worth. It took me less than 40 minutes start to finish to make a week’s worth of BARF Diet patties.

I was a little unsure of giving my dog just three patties a day. My dog is big. It didn’t seem like enough food. My hubby started referring to them disdainfully as “Doggie Snacks.”

While I was feeling bad, Frank was getting more and more lively. In one week, Frank seemed to return to his puppy-like black lab self. He was playful, energetic, feisty, and seemingly happier (labs act happy and unhappy sometimes.) Also, he stopped his incessant whining. Stopped it completely. That is hard to understand.

I know I read plenty of blogs that said whining could be cured with BARF Diets, but I didn’t really believe it would stop Frank. He is kind of annoying.

Lest you misunderstand me here…I adore the dog. Sadly he is a miserable pet. I have to say it.

Our dog has been returned to his puppyhood and he is nearly 10 years old now. Since the first week went so well, I decided on a second week of the BARF Diet and his behavior stayed the same. Right this second he is holding his toy baby in his mouth and occasionally slapping me with it so that I will play. What, you want to play?

I feel incredulous. Incredulous. If you have a lack luster dog, feed him better food–BARF Food. It has our dog fully revived.

Stay tuned. We are always testing things on Frank. He is a great Hypoallergenic Dog Food dog food tester.

Treats, toys, Food, Beds & Flea Control

Is there really such a thing as the BARF Diet for dogs? Well, yes. I find the acronym distasteful (pun intended); though, it has a ring to it, so I will “tastelessly” use it here. Some pet owners refer to BARF as Bones and Raw Food; however, it is most widely known as Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.

BARF Diet advocates are those who believe that dogs and cats ought to be fed according to evolutionary guidelines. Foods that the ancestors of dogs and cats would have eaten in the great outdoors are whole grains, high protein meats, organ meats, bone, fats, veggies, and fruits.

What’s so crazy about that idea? Why does the BARF Diet conjure up such outrage? Well, for one reason, the BARF Diet is thumbing its nose at Brand Name Big Bag Dog Food Manufacturers. No need to name names really. You know them already. The mega dog food companies have a corner on the dog food industry and they like it that way.

Before 1930 all dogs and cats were being graced with a BARF Diet because they were fed right off the farm’s dining room table. Processed animal food had not become commonplace, as it is now. Funny how the BARF Diet controversy closely aligns with the epiphany that McD’s fries are not health food. If fries and shakes are harmful to people, then it is obvious that highly processed food is unhealthy for our pets, too.

Even though my supposition in this article appears to be accurate, the jury continues to be out. There are very few studies validating the advantages of the BARF Diet and numerous scientific studies by pet food suppliers showing the benefits of processed kibble. To be realistic, pet food producers are usually hard at work trying to make innovations to big bag dog foods. For example, it truly is much easier these days to get Omega-3 oils added or grain as well as protein based pet foods on pet store shelves. On the other hand, the BARF Diet has been plagued occasionally with discoveries of E. Coli as well as Salmonella. Like I said, the jury is still out.

Nonetheless, if your pet is sensitive to processed food and gets diarrhea, smelly waste, itchy skin, ear aches, etc., we suggest switching to a more natural, hypoallergenic dog food enriched with grains, proteins, vitamins, oils and enzymes. One of the key reasons dogs live a long healthy life is their association with healthful foods. Try the BARF Diet and see for yourself. Or, just take a few more minutes to read the labels on the processed dog food to find ingredients that are organic, pure, whole and without chemicals you are loath to pronounce. It very likely will improve the health of your dog and lengthen the lifespan. Wouldn’t that be great?
